The matte colors of the KAYA porcelain series are a treat for glaze lovers. Due to the greater hardness of porcelain compared to the metal used to make standard cutlery, metal abrasion may occur on the matte pieces of the KAYA series. This is because the matte appearance is achieved by microscopic bulges and elevations in the porcelain that absorb any reflection. This surface irregularity, invisible to the naked eye, ensures minimal abrasion of the cutlery – comparable to using a pencil on paper. Since these marks do not constitute scratches in the porcelain, they can be easily removed if necessary with a cleaning paste specially designed for this purpose. You can also find this in our shop.

Why does every KAYA piece look slightly different?
Every KAYA piece is individually hand-thrown on the potter's wheel. This means shape, height, surface and glaze can differ slightly from piece to piece.
These small differences are characteristic of hand-thrown porcelain. They give a KAYA table setting a lively, individual character – pieces that belong together without being completely identical.
This handcrafted variation should be distinguished from signs of wear or damage that may appear later through use.
Is KAYA handmade?
Yes. KAYA is handmade porcelain tableware. Each piece is individually shaped on the potter's wheel in a specialised manufactory, then finished, glazed and fired in several further steps.
This handwork remains visible in the finished piece. It is exactly what gives KAYA its individual character and sets the collection apart from perfectly uniform, industrially produced tableware.
What does "hand-thrown porcelain" mean?
Hand-thrown means that the shape of a KAYA piece is created individually on the potter's wheel. The potter shapes the porcelain directly on the wheel.
This creates subtle differences between plates, bowls and cups. Choosing KAYA means consciously choosing this visible signature of the making process.
Why does KAYA have such a fine rim?
The especially fine rim is one of KAYA's key design features. It makes the porcelain look light and delicate, and is immediately noticeable when drinking and eating, particularly with the cups and bowls.
This fineness is part of KAYA's distinctive feel. At the same time, a very fine porcelain rim calls for a little more care than especially thick-walled tableware: knocks against hard objects should be avoided.
Is KAYA sold individually?
No. Regular KAYA products are generally sold as a SET OF 2. You receive two pieces of the same shape in your chosen colour.
The two hand-thrown pieces belong together, but don't have to look completely identical. These subtle differences are very much part of the KAYA character.
In addition, there are selected, curated KAYA sets that combine different shapes for specific table moments.
What's included in a KAYA set?
For regular KAYA products, SET OF 2 means: two pieces of the same shape in your chosen colour.
In addition, MAOMI offers selected, curated KAYA sets that combine several shapes. The exact contents and set price are stated on the relevant set.
This means you can either build your KAYA collection shape by shape, or start with an already curated combination.
Is KAYA suitable for everyday use?
KAYA can be used in everyday life. The collection combines hand-thrown porcelain with especially fine proportions and individual surfaces – and should therefore be handled a little more mindfully than particularly robust, thick-walled or industrially produced tableware.
KAYA is especially suited to people for whom individuality, tactile quality and visible craftsmanship matter, and who are willing to use special objects with a little extra care.

Can cutlery marks appear on KAYA's matte glaze?
Yes. Over time, dark or grey marks can become visible on matte KAYA glazes from knives and other metal cutlery.
These marks are metal abrasion from the cutlery on the matte glaze surface. They should not be confused with the natural handcrafted variation of a new KAYA piece.
Choosing a matte porcelain surface means choosing its distinctive tactile quality – but it's worth knowing that signs of use can be more visible on it than on high-gloss surfaces.
