Why does every ELEPHANT FEET glaze look slightly different?
Every ELEPHANT FEET glaze is the result of a small experiment with fire, minerals and oxygen in the kiln. Even minimal changes in the mineral composition, firing temperature or oxygen saturation cause the colour to turn out differently. So no shade is exactly like the next – every piece carries its own small piece of chance within it.
Where do ELEPHANT FEET's unusual, irregular shapes come from?
The shapes go back to small, hand-thrown test vessels that the artist Emmanuel Boos used in his workshop to try out new glaze mixes and their reaction to firing temperature and oxygen supply – the series was developed on the basis of his œuvre. These amorphous, organic test shapes were further developed together with him and translated into a whole series of cups, plates and bowls – so the deliberate irregularity is no accident, but part of the concept.
Who is behind the design of ELEPHANT FEET?
ELEPHANT FEET is based on the work of Dr Emmanuel Boos, a porcelain artist who has been experimenting with celadon glazes for over 20 years. His exploration of minerals, firing temperature and oxygen supply forms the basis of the entire collection.
What is a celadon glaze?
Celadon is a traditional glazing technique originating in China. It's created by firing in a reducing atmosphere, which causes iron oxides in the glaze to take on a jade-like, greenish tone. Celadon glazes are known for their transparency and for beautifully highlighting the fine details and textures of the ceramic.
What is stoneware, and why is it suited to ELEPHANT FEET?
Stoneware is a type of ceramic fired at temperatures between 900 °C and 1150 °C. The firing process gives the material a pleasant feel and a natural, expressive look – exactly the foundation needed for ELEPHANT FEET's celadon glazes to unfold their full effect.
Where is ELEPHANT FEET made?
ELEPHANT FEET is made by our manufactory partner in Sri Lanka – in small batches and with a resource-conscious firing process that uses only mineral glazes and local raw materials.
