Cutlery scuffs on matte tableware: What you should know – and how to easily remove them
Porcelain tableware with a matte glaze is enjoying great popularity – and for good reason. The characteristic, velvety feel and the elegant, low-reflective surface lend every table setting a special aesthetic. However, even with proper use, fine gray marks, known as knife marks, can appear on the matte surface. But what exactly is behind these marks – and how can these marks be removed?
Why do knife drawings come into being?
A special glaze creates a minimally uneven, micro-textured surface, which creates a matte appearance and a soft feel to the touch. When stainless steel cutlery glides over the matte surface, fine abrasion marks sometimes appear. The metal particles on the smooth stainless steel surface adhere to the microscopic indentations of the matte tableware.
Is the porcelain damaged?
No. On the contrary: The gray markings are not damage to the matte glaze, but rather metal deposits, and are more comparable to a pencil mark on paper. The fact that even corrosion-resistant stainless steel leaves its marks on the glaze demonstrates how resilient and dense the glaze is. High-quality porcelain is generally harder than stainless steel cutlery—the marks are purely cosmetic and do not affect the function or structure of the glaze.
How can cutlery residue be removed?
The good news: knife marks can be removed easily and with few tools.
For cleaning we recommend:
-
A special porcelain cleaning paste designed for matte glazes
-
A soft cloth or sponge
-
A little water
Just a small amount of cleaning paste is enough to effortlessly remove deposits using gentle, circular motions with a damp cloth or sponge. The matte glaze remains intact and retains its original feel and appearance. Rinse the dishes thoroughly with water afterward.
Our tip
To ensure your tableware stays beautiful, remove knife marks regularly—especially on light, matte glazes, where metal marks are more visible. This will preserve the timeless beauty of your matte porcelain.
